The Search for Bridey Murphy.

With all love and greetings I am offering you this document of Facts staggering the wildist imagination-a subject that adds another dimension to our thinking, of course, under Maya’s realm a phenomenon of the waking state K.A.K. would have said.

“On 24th June 1947 when Kenneth Arnold saw a fleet of ten shining circular disks whizzing along at a thousand miles per hour,darting in and out of the peaks around Mount Rainer, State of Washington, the news flshed round the world with the speed of light waves, and started the commotion we call “flying saucers!” ವ) U.F.O. ಓ.)

T.Werner Laurie Limited, I, Doughty Street London WCI.

My Dear Puttappa,

Trust you received the card I sent you some time back. You have not cared to reply. I hope all affairs are moving peacefully after you have settled down in life. How is Manappa? Trust the health of his wife is improving. Last week Srikantan from Shimoga has sent me a very loving letter. I was surprised to get it and find the boy still has very soft corners for us and he seems to have improved well in his expressionsl I am replying to him soon.

We are at the thresold of the winter season. cvery often the temp. goes below Zero, and to see early morning the glistening frost flakes on house roofs is a very charming sight. This city is very artistic. It has a river meandering in between and fine natural forests round about. The quarter where I stay is touching one such forest and I take my walks often therein. You cannot imagine what a relief it gives, staying in the city with all its nerve-racking noises and bustles. In the forest’s there are certain areas which makes one feel the Devangi atmosphere. But today it is a tragic sigjt to see the forests. What was two months back a thickly wooded place, is now a museum of the skeletons of trees. all leaves have fallen off, all birds have flown away, except the pigeons and house sparrows feeding on the crumbs of bread and cereals children leave at the balcony for them. The sweet chirp of the sparrows wakes me up each morning against a bizzare background of “my wealther” The Sun remains a mystery for another 3 more months, adn the timid rays unexpectedly ligjt on a cheerless world only to make its sombre appearance more ghastly. The summer was different. There was bright sun light and Sun was setting only at 8.30 p.m.  and in nature one felt exactly the Mysore environment. Now sun sets by 4.30 p.m. and my constitutional (walks take after mid-day meal! Some time back I had been to the village home of my hosts and ramped about the fields and forests: The local grounds there  reminded me of our own places: No difference except that  shorn of external dress and customs the average man in our place has far higher culture, tho’statistics do not show a lterate percentage which means here the capacity to handle a newspaper and the slaves of its excitement! Hardly we meet a Nanjegowda of weavers line type.

In the country I met our “crow” and my hosts said that when all other birds are driven out by the  chill of winter, this gentleman makes his annual visit to Europe. He can survive any weather and I think the Indian legend that he has abnormally long life may be correct!

Except in its wonderful gardens and works of art one won’t feel at home in a metropolis like Paris with its 6 million inhabitants, This is only an enlarged edition of Bombay or Calcutta. French are a bit different from the usual type of Europeans. There is absolutely no colour bar. It is a common sight to find a pitch cark negro walking hand in hand with his white fiancee and the world moves as normally as ever  and no body ever and no body ever raises a head to observe. But conditions are different even in areas held by other nationalities. The other day when I went to open an account in an American Bank, They quietly evaded me and some friends who heard of it said that because I am a coloured man they did not want to take me in for fear of scaring their usual customers. Altho’ from the standpoint of colour there is no difference. I wanted to know how far the colonies are profited. Here the story is the same all round the west. Colonies are profited. Here the story is the same all round the west. Colonies are primarily only for exploitation. Frence or otherwise and all pretentions of being agents of civilisation are only eye washes. European Imperialism works in the same manner and it is this greed and rapacity for expansion that creates world crises and the war neurosis steals our peace from the face of the globe. But comparatively speaking in France are found a greater expression of the nobler mind of Europe. Very often I spend some pensive minutes sround the statue of Voltaire which stands near the Frence Academy (which is equavalent to your Karnataka Sahitya Parishat; the French Academy has a longer history and is the custodian of the best traditions of their literature). Voltaire’s diagnosis of the cure for the ills of the world which you quote so often. I consciously remember at the foot of the statue and I feel the figure come to life mirroring a more sarcastic expression on the face than is so ably recorded by the sculptor. Roman catholicism has openly expressed itself on the side of Franco in Spain and a recent correspondence released between the cardinals and Bishop of Spain and France and Archbishop of Canterbury show how the church is organising a powerful resistance against “Soviet ideas and atheism.” Europe is dividing into two big armed camps in support of  and as against the modern socialistic ideas Dictators take the help of the  church whenever possible. I am sending the particular newspaper clipping with my translation from French, to “V.S” who seeing it here wanted copies from me. This only reveals how primitive savagery reappears in modern times in such powerful forms. I am now becoming — what would you say,–follower of Rt.Hon.Sastry–!!! No reform can work on hatred. They say the  Republican government provoked the church to a very insulting extent and so now the whole Roman Catholic family has joined hands with forces of “right” in politics to oppose the “left” To play the Amanulla is a tragic game and so Batcha Sakkoes are bound to appear. The story is so different in India–Even when Gandhiji violates the sentiments of the church, he is revered and worshipped. Even the orthodox Pandit who Pandit who was biting his teeth and in weighing in such sarcasm as “Harijanaro! Kurijanaro, eno, gothilla” (use of my Mysore-Nanjanagud railway experiences) cannot but admit in his heart of hearts the supreme spiritual centre from which the force of reform has regenerated in India. That is the true movement of  democracy, for  it is the movement  of the spirit to find its level; this natural and instinctive process is made to function consciously by our sages who in themselves form “radio-active centres” that raise the level of human consciousness, and theirs is always the work of constructive reformation. Even the certain amount of painful operation performed by such Surgeons of Life; will not produce a reaction for it contribute to the real health. In the west the Reforer’s make make-shift arrangements and the natural impulse for levelling down differences, cannot get a disinterested direction from the leaders society. The influence of west on East for good, has undoubtedly produced a vast turn in oriental consciousness as regards the rights of the individual –and this guided by the innate genius of ou nation to find real philosophy of all actions in the spiritual culture of the race, is creating a world solution for that challenge, culture stands to meet, at the bar of civilisation. One of the Dictators recently pronounced that he is out to liquidate the ideals of the Frence Revolution, which started a new order in social and political rights. Soviet ideas are nothing but the lineal descendants of Republican Cannons of life. U.S.S.R followed it up with violence and hatred as the method of realising theirs. Any ideology working in violence can never achieve any lasting good. It’s just like a Surgeon with septic hands attending the table. The world situation now is a reaction to Moscow–the counter revolution of fundamentalists, no-changes and Sanatanists. The impulse for socialisation is only a natural legitimate process of nature and when the appeal is made in this cultural side. which is real education and when these ideas sieve thro’the intelligence in MAN, is a conscious process. it purifies the instinct and emotion and the guidance for  action coming from the emotional basis can only be for common weal. When this truth without illumining Intelligence, excites only the emotion, we get the tragic situation of modern European civilisation. I am reminded of Swamiji’s famous dictum, “put the chemicals together, the crtstallisation will take care of itself.” The other side of the medal is for Dictators that made of men-kurijanaru! The Buddha’s wise words “hatred cannot be conquered by hatred, but only by love” this is not the adage of the weak; Real “Sakti” can only come out of humini attitudes. Else you get only “Rakta, Takta, Ayyo! Rakta” without your Kalki, the deliverer. The situation in Europe, the situation in the far East show lamentably how western civilisaion in its militaristic aspect has failed. and just at this crisis the synthetic genius of India is discovering under the guidance of a man of character, the real symbols of social and political rapproachments. let not our eyes be blinded by undigested ideas from this side of Suez. We must follow our own technique and remember, you, literary men, the unrecognised legislators of the world–you have a serious responsibility.

I am sorry to find Rolland not having that wiene in the hearts of the friends as we in India think. As a literary man he is still held in high esteem. But a bitter political controversy since two years back has kept him now in the background. The national sentiment is strong. very strong. very strong in Frence character–and they could not brooke his new samsara giving him a new samscara at this old age. The samscara is from Russia and the great upholder  of peace all of a sudden gave expression to the view that  war is permissible  if only to support Soviet ideas. This came as a shock to his admirers who ever considered Rolland with great veneration for preaching the ideals of peace to a war-mad west. We are ever grateful to him for he has introduced Ramakrishna, to the West. My hosts tell me that it is said that just after the publication of the book about twenty thousand readers wrote personally to Rolland expressing their admiration! Does this not  sound like the usual exaggerations for which I only am credited! and makes—and—-deduct 50p.c.! But this figure may be correct. I heard some idea about this popularity of the book last week when Prof. Masson–Pursel (Ousel), sucessor of Levy (the Prof.Hiriyanna of Paris University) when he spoke on Buddha. After the lecture questions were invited and every member began to speak more of Ramakrishna than Buddha and in the end I was asked to give an explanation. Why no Buddhistic  experiences, Ramakrishna had: I had to briefly tell that Ramakrishna did not consider the religion of  Buddha as  diffeent from Vedantism and so he did not practice Buddhism as he did the other faiths and his Nirvikalpa experience can be equated with Buddistic realisation and that his respect  for Buddha is seen in many of his conversations. Rolland has not discussed this aspect and people’s impressions are derived  from Rolland’s book: Prof.Masson-Pursel(Ousel) is a man of high character and is respected in the same way as Prof. Hiriyanna. He is yery mild and unassuming. Thus he is holding such a high place amongst the Oriental scholars in the West. I shall one day be meeting him for a long talk on the above point which at the midnight hour I could not  discuss  with him. His impression is also that “Ramakrishna had  no Buddhistic experience and I feel that a Gouranga, or a Christ or a Mohamad is comparatively very easy affair than to known (connaissance the French term for Jnana) which is the cordinal factor in Buddhistic experience which is so difficult to achieve.”

The Noble prize for literature has been given this time to “French man–Roger Martin Du Gard, for his vey famous novel, “Les Thibault.” It has 10 volumes and the last volume came out last year: It is a book like your “Chinnamma Heggadithi” (or what is it, I forget such a mouthful name). Within an year I hope to read and understand these books well. As I saw this announcement. I imagined that one day I would see you coming to Europe to receive the same honour and my today’s dream would be the realisation of tomorrow!

I am making sufficient progress in French studies. For a year I wish to remain incognito to leave me time to learn the language. In spite of my being here not announced to the public, the news of my being here has leaked out to the public and I cannot avoid giving some interviews or lessons to a few individuals in Vedanta and meditation. From next week I am requested to conduct the meditation classes in the society called “Les Anis du Buddhisms” i.e.”Friends of Buddhism” This is  a society that has a recognised satus. By the time I pick up good language to converse, there  would be a good group ready also to receive the teachings. I do not want to go hastily in forming the “centre.” Even as I remain incognito as a student, three persons are regularly taking lessons. When this number comes to a fifty, I can be confident of having  and earnest group that would stand by the work when it is finaly organised. The rapid circulation of the Swamy’s four yogas and the Life of Thakur by Rolland have already created a good “Clientele” for these ideas and what is most auspicious is that my coming here has coincided, with a Frence devotee (of Ashokananda) From San Francisco donating  a considerable amount to transalate the complete works of Swamiji in 18 handy cheap volumes. The work already in progress will be in the hands of th public by 1940. Scattered in all parts of France are good number who have been attracted by these ideas and influenced by Rolland’s book, who now want guidance. Herbert has prepared a “waiting list” to be introduced to me after I am able to talk to them in French.

I got already two examples of “moffusil devotion” One family only came to meet me here last week undertaking  a journey of 18 hours from a place called Foire near Pyrennes–the Rounets. They came at considerable expense, stayed for two days and has now gone back. They were in touch with swami Sambuddhananda of Belur mutt. M. Rounets. is a literary man, and is in charge of De Peche one of the most popular dailies and he represents me Province or the ——–He has so fondly invited  me to his  place which is on Spain border. He has reserved a room for me! From Catholicism he came to Buddha, then to Ramakrishna with a wonderful devotion to Buddha which he now equally enjoys.

From this week. i have taken up for study, a classical book  in French Renan’s Life of Jesus and would you believe it, I am following it up. Everything in study is delicious except, mugging up grammar-tasting castor oil! I cheated my English grammar lessons and so”Prarabdha” is vigorously collecting its title from me at an advanced age. Without grammar one cannot progress in Frence. As per conversation the company of my hosts who do not  know English is the best corrective for me not to become idle and as a result. I was able to give and interview to two people, in French as they did not know English. But that  talk was my French, like my kannada in Kuply, addressed to your family group. But if your people has been as rigorous as  the French people are in enforcing to learn the language, I would have learnt Kannada with greater—–and application. However I am glad that by the time I left I was able to understand all talks and some pieces of  good literature. As  for  all Swami’s coming to work in Mysore, the study of language should be insisted upon. Our work would grow enormously then; If we confine to Engilish we touch a few English education conceited group and will have no touch with the mass mind. Don’t allow Desikananda to move out of Mysore. He can touch the masses’, and make him do it. When I come back to Mysore, I wish to go to a place where no English is spoken and only Kannada is heard and that alone will make me get out of this snobbishness to speak an unknown language. But when shall I come back! i am heaving a sigh! Macleod remanded me to Swamis’advice to Nivedita to forget England, if she wanted real work in India. But we cannnot forget India–whose breath we carry here is the only solace can give to this restles world. The full significance of Grays line. The maddening  worlds’ignoble stripe you realise here. It was very unwise of Bangalore people  to have sent my letter to TaiNadu. Kasturi also wrote like you. You all love me and so you felt so much. Dont’worry.”

[1] In personal letters, the world we speak of is our world and no profane minds should Saunter in there where they have no right to enter.

I shall  be soon associating with the Paris University by attending as many extension lectures which are numerous in every week. This is a wonderful university. Professors are paid not so much to teach the student who come to only a hour a week or so but to concentrate all their attention in their special subject and this they do with joy, and benefit of their work the  general public also shares. I hope the congress administration in education would achieve something like this.

Please tell Seshu mama and Mari how glad I felt in getting their letters. Remember me to Mr. Venkannappa, whom I remember so often here. I had suggested to him to tell your colleague Mr. Srikantiah (T.N.) that there is a marvellous cure for insanity–one Dr.Kamath has a clinic in Bombay. Mr.Anantha Pai–of research laboratory Madras. Vimal maharaj friend will give all introduction of how to use and I think Mr. Srikantaiah can give atrial of this field to his ailing sister. It seems very long standing cases are cured. The recipe–as every such story goes–is from a sadhu. But it has now an English name and is sold in all pharmacies. Trust Katruri and Murthy got the letters I had sent with a few snaps I had enclosed of mine Please tell Desikanandiji that  Revered Suresh Maharaj has sent thro’ Mr.”V.S.” a brass  figure–“3 monkies together–one closing ear, another closing mouth, another eyes” signifying don’t see bad things, hear bad words or speak bad things–Rev.Suresh Maharaj wants some copies of this made in sandel wood. Rev.Suresh maharaj will write the number required.

Please don’t forget to give all news of me to dear Tatagaroo. I am soon writing to him.

It is a maddening world. I have yet to see a calm man and our Indian faces strike them much and many have remarked to me “your Indian faces have such peace on them.”One has to put on some conscious resolution to withstand the environment. When we walk in the road and streets every one on the pavement runs as it were as if the neighbouring  house is in fire and his bucket of water alone will quell the conflagration. Sometimes as i walk, unconfessly, unconsciously, I aslo fall in the imitation of neighbouring strides. Then I start to think “I am from India, the land of peace. Why should I tire my limbs in excited walk” and then I walk calmly. It is all a false cannon to believe that for the westerner time is precious and so they spare every minute to do some job. All nonsense. They are slaves of time and they create the excitement for they are afraid of peace; habituated to rest-lessness. The whirl of life here, helps more considerably to consciously react to the country and enjoy the peace fo the soul. When our normal inner nature which is generally restless is readjusted and pointedly prtrayed in external life around–you become conscious of your own subconscious in the environmental reflections and this reaction, the awareness of fact ,itself has the potency of taking you across it. Jung’s theory of “compensation” is based on this truth.

Kindly remember me  to all our dear boys. Vijaya Dev. Srinivasa Gopal, Chandru, Venkatappa, Krishnappa (where are they all). Remember me to your brother Venkatesh and all at Devangi and Kuply. Remember me to A.C.Narasimhamurthy.

With much love and awaiting your letter by return mail,

Yours affectionately
Siddeswarananda

P.S.: I am enclosing a fine poem which I picked up long ago from an English Daily. I send it to you because it substatiates Jungi Thoery of  Gannes (generes)–such fine product from convict. Some of the lines are magnificient. 26.XI.37.

Is it not funny I get your very loving letter as I close this long lettter. Very glad to hear all about you. Send me a picture–snap of your new house. Please give all news to Ashram. I have already sent Desikanandiji and all there my Vijaya greetings.
